For now, you might want to take this one with at least a little pinch of salt, but specs have been posted online for an alleged Sigma 14mm f/1.4 lens. Yes, that’s an extremely wide aperture for such an ultra-wide-angle lens. This is why I suggested that pinch of salt. If such a lens were to become a reality, though, the specs – particularly the weight of the potentially massive lens – do seem to add up.

The naming for the apparently upcoming Sigma 14mm f/1.4 DG DN Art suggests that will be a full-frame lens. This is what the “DG” nomenclature denotes. It also appears that the lens will utilise rear gel filters, due to a mention of the Sigma GP-11 guide plate (buy here), as used with the Sigma 24mm f/1.4 DG DN Art (buy here) lens for its rear filters.

As this is already a fairly iffy rumour, there’s obviously no mention of when Sigma might announce such a lens, nor how much it’ll cost. It is a pretty extreme lens, even by Sigma’s standards, although the Sigma 105mm f/1.4 and 135mm f/1.8 Art lenses were pretty extreme at the time of their introduction, too. So, it is possible that they’re taking ultra-wide to its extremes, too. It will likely come at a very premium price, however.

Sigma 14mm f/1.4 DG DN Art – Rumoured Specs

If the specs are true, they don’t appear to be entirely complete. This is what’s been “leaked” so far, and there are a few missing. If it is true, and this lens is on the way, then I expect the rest of the details will be coming at some point before an official announcement.

It’s said to utilise the LC1014-01 lens cap, which matches the reported 101.4mm lens diameter – oh yeah, it’s a chunky one! It will also utilise the TS-141 tripod collar. You wouldn’t normally need a tripod collar on an ultra-wide-angle lens like this, but given the diameter of this one, it’ll stick out well below the bottom of most (if not all) L mount and E mount cameras you could potentially mount it to. So, the tripod collar will help to raise this up, not to mention balance the weight.

It does sound like an extremely interesting lens, if it’s real, offering a wide range of shooting possibilities for everything from astrophotographers and photographers, who want a lot of light coming in with wide angles, to product and close-up photographers who want to get right up to their subjects with a wide angle to add context while keeping a moderately shallow depth of field.
