Canon has previously been very quiet on the topic of 3rd party RF lenses. Last year, all of Samyang’s autofocus RF mount lenses disappeared from the market and just a week ago, so did all of the autofocus RF mount lenses made by Viltrox. Samyang didn’t say a word about why theirs left the market but Viltrox has told customers that they’ve been ordered to stop selling RF mount products by Canon.

Now, a statement from Canon indeed confirms that they told Viltrox to quit selling autofocus RF mount lenses as they believe that they infringe on their patent and design rights. Canona specifically mentions RF lenses with respect to autofocus in the statement, which is something I previously speculated upon, so it appears that we may still be able to continue to see manual focus RF mount lenses from third parties.

The original statement from Canon in German, published on Photographix Magazine reads:

„SHENZHEN JUEYING TECHNOLOGY CO.LTD, stellt unter dem Markennamen „Viltrox“ Autofokus-Objektive für den RF-Mount von Canon her. Canon ist der Ansicht, dass diese Produkte ihre Patent- und Geschmacksmusterrechte verletzen und hat das Unternehmen daher aufgefordert, alle Handlungen einzustellen, die die geistigen Eigentumsrechte von Canon verletzen.“

– Canon Deutschland

Translated into English (via Google), it says:

“SHENZHEN JUEYING TECHNOLOGY CO.LTD, manufactures auto focus lenses for Canon RF mount under the brand name “Viltrox”. Canon believes that these products infringe their patent and design rights and has therefore requested the company to stop all activities infringing on Canon’s intellectual property rights.”

– Canon Germany

So, while Fuji’s (finally) actively trying to encourage third parties to create autofocus lenses for the X mount system, Canon seems to be doing the opposite for the RF mount system. It’s not surprising, really. Canon wants to make people come back to them for their lenses, but when they’re ridiculously overpriced compared to the competition and even previous EF mount versions of the same lenses, it’s going to be a hard sell for a lot of people – especially when they want that Sigma Art glass so much.

And speaking of Sigma… Whether or not we’ll see any RF mount lenses coming from them remains to be seen. Obviously, they can’t just reverse engineer it and make them or Canon will shut them down as they have done with Viltrox and presumably Samyang. But Sigma’s a much bigger player than Viltrox and Samyang. Could Canon actually license the tech to them? Maybe, but I wouldn’t hold your breath.

Just protecting their IP and Patents, what’s the point of doing R&D? Same principle as they’ve done before with their EF lenses. Third Parties could offer to licence it but at the end of the day it’s Canon’s discretion but it sucks for consumers.

yeah I do really get your point, and to be fair; im a canon user and only have 5 or 6 3rd party lenses – and love the ‘original’ ones.. but for most consumers its not fun

This is just a dick move by Canon. I have been loyal to Canon since the AV-1. I also have a collection of third party lenses I got to meet my photography requirement till I could afford the Canon gold standard lenses. I have some non-OEM lenses that out perform the Canon equivalent. The third party market is what keeps competition at price points. Manufactures have been do this for years where third party manufactures were licensed to make their lenses. Hell, Sony is in the position it is in now because of their use of third party lens manufacturers. My faith in Canon is now in jeopardy and will not make the move to Canon as such when I decide to go mirrorless.

I use the EF adapter so that my Tamron 150-600mm works on the R7. Works great.

The 3rd party market is huge. If Canon wants to try and force people to buy their lenses and scrape the money to earn from lenses over selling their camera bodies, then go ahead
